World Forest Day
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.
The theme for 2022 is "Forests and sustainable production and consumption."
Today, forests cover more than 30% of the world's land and contain more than 60,000 tree species, many as of yet unidentified. Forests provide food, fiber, water and medicines for approximately 1.6 billion of the world's poorest people, including indigenous peoples with unique cultures.
Each and every day, we use at least one thing that comes from forest or one of its component comes from forest, be it oxygen, rain, paper, glue, medicines, leather, rubber and the list can go on and yet we know so little about their importance in comparison to air, water and other resources. This day aims at spreading awareness about the importance of all types of forests, to get the efforts towards saving them going and to rejuvenate all that we have destroyed or cut overtime. So let use this day as the opportunity to learn and get others to learn about our forests, their importance, their condition, and the need for their conservation.
“Nature holds the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and even spiritual satisfaction.” – E. O. Wilson
“The forest is a peculiar organism of unlimited kindness and benevolence that makes no demands for its sustenance and extends generously the products of its life activity; it affords protection to all beings, offering shade even to the axe-man who destroys it.” –Gautama Buddha
“The forest is not a resource for us, it is life itself. It is the only place for us to live.” -Evaristo Nugkuag Ikanan
